Chinon

Chateau de Chinon - The primary landmark in Chinon

This former residence of the monarchs of France is now a village that prides on the red wines that it produces. Prior to the 16th century, Chateau de Chinon was used as a stronghold by Henry II of England (otherwise known as Henry Plantagenet) and then followed by the royal line of France after 1205.

This community became one of the places in France visited by the legendary Joan of Arc, who visited King Charles VII of France in 1429. It was here where she sought the dauphin among a throng of courtiers, recognizing him as one of the men disguised as a commoner.

Nowadays the Chateau de Chinon is a far cry from a glorious castle it once was during the medieval period, but visitors can still see vestiges of the structure whenever they visit. The Chateau de Chinon was also used as a setting for The Lion in Winter, which was subsequently turned into a play and film.
